Today in class Mr. Schick wasn't here so he gave us an assignment to write a paragraph about each religion we talked about. Doing this will also help to prepare for the upcoming test on Friday.
The first major religion is Christianity. Christianity is the largest religion with about 2.2 billion adherents and many denominations such as, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant. These denominations and adherents are mainly spread throughout South and North America, Europe, and South Africa. Christianity's main leader is Jesus Christ or the Holy Trinity. Believers of Christianity believe that Jesus is human and truly divine. Christians (the name of the adherents of Christianity) use the Holy, The Bible and the main points, The Gospels.
The second largest religion is Islam with about 1.5 billion adherents and two denominations, Sunnis (75-90%) and the Shiites (10-20%). Most adherents of Islam are located in Indonesia, Middle East, and Northern Africa. These two denominations fight and have many arguments. The founder of Islam is Muhammad (570-632). During his time he wrote many things and spoke the word he thought was correct in the way of religion. The followers called, Muslims, believe in the Five Pillars which are testimony, prayer, alms-giving, fasting, and pilgrimage. Their Holy Book is called, The Qur'an.
The third largest religion is Hinduism with 1.1 billion adherents located across India and Nepal. There is not one single founder of Hinduism instead a series of intellectual or philosophical points of view. Hinduism is the oldest religion still being practiced. The Holy Books used in Hinduism are called, The Vedas. They are written in verse form and are external truths revealed through ancient sages.
The fourth largest major religion is Buddhism with 500-1.5 billion adherents. It is not known because many people who practice Buddhism also practice another religion. The adherents are spread across Southeast Asia, China, Nepal, and Japan. The founder is Siddhartha Gautama and it has four different denominations, Tibetan, Zen, Theravada, and Amidst. They believe in the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
The fifth major religion but actually the ninth largest religion is Judaism with 14-18 million adherents. The adherents are located in Israel and the US. The Holy Book they use is called, The Torah.
