Socrates

Today in class we learned about Socrates and talked about his trail. Our class was the "jury" and we voted 10 to 11 that Socrates was not-guilty and shouldn't be put to death. I myself thought that he was guilty of Corruption of Athens Youth because if he didn't want them to change their minds on the topics or think about other ways then he wouldn't have tried convince them that their could be another way. While I think he was guilty of the first accusation but I don't think he was guilty of impiety because he never said or did anything to prove he didn't believe in the Gods.

  • He was accused of two crimes, Corruption of Athens Youth and Impiety.
  • Impiety is the lack of believing in the Gods.
  • He just wanted the youth to think that there could be another way than the way they were taught.
  • During Socrates trail during his defense, he said, "It's my job to be the gadfly to the lazy sluggish horse that is Athens. He was basically admitting to doing it.
  • The jury of 500 male citizens found him guilty in a vote of 279 to 221 and put him to his punishment of drinking hemlock.
  • Socrates friends and guards gave him a chance to escape the penalty but he didn't go because he wanted to show his loyalty.
  • During the ancient Greeks time calling someone an idiot did not mean the same thing as it does today. Today it means "A stupid person."
  • They said, "Idiots are born, citizens are made."
