Changing U.S Immigration

Today in class we took notes on another packet about migration. I highlighted points that I thought were important then wrote them into my notebook then wrote it in my blog.   The first thing I highlighted was, Those who enter without proper documents and are called, unauthorized immigrants.

  • Unauthorized immigrants: is the term preferred by academic observers, as a neutral term.
  • Undocumented immigrants: is the term preferred by some groups that advocate for more rights for these individuals.
  • Illegal alien: is the term preferred by some of the groups that favor tougher restrictions and enforcement of immigration laws.
Quotas, or maximum limits on the number of people who could immigrate to the United States during a one-year period. Twelve million immigrants to the United States between 1892 and 1954 were processed at Ellis Island. After decades of dispute, New Jersey took its case to the US Supreme Court. In 1988 the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that New Jersey had jurisdiction over 22.8. acres of Ellis Island and New York had jurisdiction over only 4.7 acres.

Chain migration, which is of people to a specific location because relatives or members of the same nationality previously migrated there.  The US-Mexico is 1,951 miles long. Most Americans actually support a path of US citizenship for unauthorized immigrants. American favor letting law enforcement officials stop and verify the legal status of anyone they suspect of being an unauthorized immigrants. Polls show that most Americans believe that enforcement of unauthorized immigration is  federal government responsibility and do not support the use of local law enforcement officials to find unauthorized immigrants. Texas has no harsh anti-immigration laws supporting more rights for unauthorized immigrants. They gave Texas the name "Sanctuary City."
Circular migration, which is the temporary movement of a migrant worker between home and host countries to seek employment. The term "guest worker" is no longer used is Europe, and government programs no longer exist. Immigrants comprise around 8% of Europes population.
